4 Ways to Make the Most out of a Small Bathroom Space

Since bathrooms are, by nature, small spaces, they can be challenging when it comes to remodeling. You definitely want enough personal space in a bathroom, even if it’s just a tiny powder room. It can be tricky to find ways to open up a confined area like this without taking out walls and moving plumbing. But fear not: there are simple ways that can make your bathroom feel more open.

When you’re trying to make the most out of limited space, there are a few things that will help you utilize that area. When you’re stuck with minimal space, try these tricks to make your bathroom feel bigger than it is.

Incorporate Storage

The best way to hide all the products and supplies you need in your bathroom is with ample storage space. If you’re doing a bathroom remodel, figure out how much room you’ll need for storage and design your cabinetry around it. During a remodeling project is the best time to decide on your storage needs because you’ll be able to customize your bathroom with the perfect amount of drawers and cupboards.

If you find later on that your cabinetry still doesn’t offer enough extra space for organization, try adding other amenities to hold your products. An over-the-toilet vanity is an easy solution that doesn’t take up much room and keeps everything within arm’s reach. All your personal items will be out of sight and out of mind, leaving your bathroom feeling much more spacious and clean.

Keep Décor to a Minimum

Particularly in half-baths, it’s easy for a small space to feel overcrowded with a few too many decorative items. Rather than having decorative jars, air fresheners and other trinkets taking up counterspace, keep your bathroom design simple. When you’re remodeling, choose a luxurious marble stone for the counters or a patterned tile for floors and showers. This will add eye-catching personality to your bathroom without making it feel crowded.

If you still feel like you need a “statement piece” in your bathroom, go for a piece of art you can hang on the wall. It will help your bathroom maintain that clean feeling and won’t take up coveted counterspace.

Go for a Glass Shower Door

Anything obstructing the full view of a tiny room instantly creates the sense that you’re in tight quarters. This includes the shower door or curtain, which can quickly change the size of a bathroom. Instead of a colorful shower curtain, go for a clear glass door, or eliminate the curtain altogether. Being able to see through the door will give the illusion that the room is larger than it is. Plus, you won’t feel so claustrophobic in the shower if you can see outside the door.

Be Careful About your Color Palette

Most people know that light colors make a space feel bigger and more open. This is particularly true when it comes to bathrooms, and why your best bet with tiny spaces is to choose a color that is light, making your room feel less enclosed.

However, by no means does this mean you have to have stark white walls. Try using neutral tones, like several shades of greys, creams or light blues. Avoid dark colors like black, navy or red. Paired with good lighting, your bathroom will seem much more open.

Updating a confined space like a bathroom can prove to be trickier than imagined. But with these simple tricks, you’ll be able to make the most out of any sized bathroom.
